Curtis Stigers

Stigers is a 2009 Emmy Award nominee for his original theme song created for the acclaimed FX TV series "The Sons of Anarchy". With over 600,000 YouTube views solely for that song, Stigers is capturing younger audiences' attention and receiving wide cross-over acclaim. Stigers' concert performances and recordings continue to defy categorization, with a singularly distinctive, compelling delivery of a classic-to-contemporary songbook unparalleled in today's jazz & popular music marketplace. Across the pond, Curtis was named BBC Radio 2 Jazz Artist of the Year in addition to receiving Jazz Album of the Year honors from the London Times. His August performance with the John Wilson Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in the "BBC Proms" adds his name to the luminary roster of artists featured in this legendary 100-year- festival. On this side of the Atlantic, Lost in Dreams, Stigers' new CD on Concord Records was released on September 29, 2009. Alongside his own new material and standards like "My Funny Valentine," "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" are jazz renditions of Annie Lennox's "Cold," Ron Sexsmith's "Reason for Our Love" and John Lennon's "Jealous Guy."

A lean, pop-jazz hipster whose buzz-saw voice, much like that of Tom Waits, slices away glib sentimentality, Curtis Stigers is not the usual sort of act one finds at the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel, although he has played there before. (The last time was five years ago.) Depending on your definition he is either a rock 'n' roll jazz man who plays a honking saxophone that echoes his raw, craggy singing or a jazz-influenced rocker. New York Times - Stephen Holden - Jun 11th, 2009

Not since Chet Baker has a male warbler been quite so cool at impeccably interpreting the Great American Songbook. Village Voice - David Finkle - Jun 2nd, 2009

Stigers's knack of unearthing distinguished contemporary material remains one of his main assets. He has an aficionado's love of jazz, yet his tastes are anything but purist. While he can swing "Bye Bye Blackbird" as neatly as anyone, within minutes he will be charting an intelligent course through Ron Sexsmith's "Reason for Our Love" or "Turning Up the Heat" on Emmylou Harris' sultry "I Don't Want to Talk About It Now".
