The Peace Garden
trioPAYAZZO was started in 2002 in response to a question: Could great jazz be performed without a dedicated drum set, bass or vocalist? The response was a resounding YES when Bernard Kunz, Andrew Peruzzini and Harry Fackelman navigated the numerous difficulties inherent in answering such a question by selecting a crowd-pleasing European-tinged repertoire, skillfully improvising musical textures using numerous brass and woodwind instruments, hand percussion and a guitar looper that records live performance then instantly plays back as a backing track. trioPAYAZZO struck an immediate chord with the public with their skillful musicianship, creativity and willingness to push boundaries and to do the unexpected, even plunging their audience into total darkness as they created jazz over a drone produced on the tuba using circular breathing. The term PAYAZZO translates to clowning or, crazy as some have labeled them, for having the audacity to delight audiences normally accustomed to hearing straight-ahead jazz and standard instrumentation.
